An important research challenge is to determine how people decide to seek or avoid information. The suggestion is that people assess these influences and integrate them into a calculation of the value of information\r\nthat leads to information-seeking or avoidance. The theory offers a framework for characterizing and quantifying individual\r\ndifferences in information-seeking, which we hypothesize may also be diagnostic of mental health. Social proof is the phenomenon that people are prone to copy the actions of others; for example, if an individual is exposed to a group of people doing or buying something, they are more likely to do so themselves.\r\n\r\nOne of the most recognizable phrases in our fundraising banners takes the opposite approach, stating:\r\n\r\n\u201c... fewer than 1% of readers give.\u201d\r\nand\/or\r\n\u201c... 99% of readers don\u2019t give.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe online fundraising team has tested, dozens of times, removing this fact from our materials. Our donation rate drops when we try. This past year we engaged with some experts in the field and asked them to explore further why we consistently see this finding. Is there something about a non-profit or a donation context that alters the rules of social proof? We plan on continuing to conduct tests this coming year in hopes of finding conclusions around the fundraising and non-profit context of social proof.","username":"weinreich","tags":"behavior_change,nonprofit,social_norms","count":"3"},{"id":"273146","user":"167","cdate":"2019-12-16 11:49:59","updated":"2020-03-02 15:48:11","title":"Looking at Spillovers in the Mirror: Making a Case for \u201cBehavioral Spillunders\u201d | Psychology","link":"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2019.01142\/full","state":"public","note":"Behavioral spillovers refer to the influence that a given intervention targeting behavior 1 exerts on a subsequent, non-targeted, behavior 2, which may or may not be in the same domain (health, finance, etc.) as one another. So, a nudge to exercise more, for example, could lead people to eat more or less, or possibly even to give more or less to charity depending on the nature of the spillover. But what if spillovers also operate backward; that is, if the expectation of behavior 1 influences behavior 0 that precedes it? For example, a person may form an intention to exercise prompted by a policy intervention but overeat at present as a result. We define such a possibility as a \u201cspillunder.\u201d In the proposed article, we critically review the few papers that we have identified through a narrative literature review which have demonstrated spillunder effects to date, and we propose a conceptual framework.","username":"weinreich","tags":"behavior_change,theory","count":"2"}],"used_tags":["behavior_change","design","storytelling","health_communication","social_media","research","how_to","strategy","theory","target_audience","sample_campaigns","social_network","technology","graphic_design","entertainment_education","social_change","social_marketing","management","inspiration","evaluation","gaming","mobile","advertising","online_marketing","media","quantitative","campaign_effects","marketing","policy","qualitative","creativity","ethics","youth","nonprofit","humor","obesity","mental_health","video","environment","social_norms","branding","twitter","international","product","consulting","conference","government","training","price","place","blogging","professional_resource","academia","tobacco","public_relations","social_marketing_blogroll","me","social_marketing_intro","substance_abuse","HIV_AIDS","filetype:pdf","media:document","nutrition","word_of_mouth","israel","organization","cause_marketing","partnerships","cgm","tutorial","media_advocacy","PSA","publication","top_ten","bibliography","no-tag","web3","focus_groups","personal_favorite","social_marketing_jobs","chronic_disease","bookreview","publics"],"tags":[],"pages":117,"title":"weinreich bookmarks:  - page: 30"}
