In recognizing the power\r\nof words to either perpetuate or reduce stigma, Dr. Nora Volkow\u2014Director of the National\r\nInstitute on Drug Abuse\u2014recently highlighted the role of stigma in addiction,1\r\nand the\r\nmovement encouraging the use of person-first language and eliminating the use of slang and\r\nidioms when describing addiction and the people whom it affects.2,3\r\nIn this commentary, we make an appeal for researchers and clinicians to use personfirst language (e.g., \u201cpeople who smoke\u201d) rather than commonly used labels (e.g., \u201csmokers\u201d)\r\nin written (e.g., in scholarly reports) and verbal communication (e.g., clinical case\r\npresentations ) to promote greater respect and convey dignity for people who smoke.
