The word-hoard: Robert Macfarlane on rewilding our language of landscape | Books | The Guardian
For decades the leading nature writer has been collecting unusual words for landscapes and natural phenomena – from aquabob to zawn. It’s a lexicon we need to cherish in an age when a junior dictionary finds room for ‘broadband’ but has no place for ‘bluebell’

The “big three” set of exercises - for core and reducing back pain
"Spine researcher Dr Stuart McGill at the University of Waterloo in Canada has spent his career studying back pain and its rehabilitation. He recommends a “big three” set of exercises. This consists of the curl-up, the bird dog (or quadruped) and the side bridge, all of which are low-intensity and suitable for almost everyone." ~ Guardian https://is.gd/b1sUBs

The Ashtray Has Landed: The Case of Morris v. Kuhn - Los Angeles Review of Books
T. S. Kuhn, author of the immensely influential book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, a book assigned to countless students of the philosophy, history, and sociology of science, is exposed as a corrupter of the youth, the father of relativist and postmodernist heresies, an unoriginal borrower from more insightful thinkers, an arrogant dogmatist, implacably intolerant, ill-tempered, confused, contradictory, vapid, and obsessive. In Morris’s telling, the man who denied reality could not face up to what he had done.
A Learning Secret: Don’t Take Notes with a Laptop - Scientific American
Obviously it is advantageous to draft more complete notes that precisely capture the course content and allow for a verbatim review of the material at a later date. Only it isn’t. New research by Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer demonstrates that students who write out their notes on paper actually learn more. https://cpb-us-w2.wpmucdn.com/sites.udel.edu/dist/6/132/files/2010/11/Psychological-Science-2014-Mueller-0956797614524581-1u0h0yu.pdf

Book Review: Twelve Rules For Life | Slate Star Codex
I got Jordan Peterson’s Twelve Rules For Life for the same reason as the other 210,000 people: to make fun of the lobster thing. Or if not the lobster thing, then the neo-Marxism thing, or the transgender thing, or the thing where the neo-Marxist transgender lobsters want to steal your precious bodily fluids.

True Crisis in Our Time - Malcolm Muggeridge
It would be difficult for anyone looking around the world today to resist the conclusion that something has gone very badly indeed with what we continue to call “Western Civilization.” This awareness tends to be distorted and muffled – if not obliterated – by the media, which manage to induce us to take for granted the continuingly explosive situations that confront us on every hand, and to see as an enlargement of our freedom and an enhancement of the quality of our living the steady and ominous erosion of the moral standards on which our traditional way of life has been based. | consumer consuermism

SHAKESPEARE, THE EARL, AND THE JESUIT by John Klause
An excellent book which explores the close relationship between Southwell and Shakespeare. There are more verbal parallels, echoes and borrowings from Southwell by Shakespeare than from any other author, not excluding Holinshed and North (Plutarch). On the basis of John Klause's discoveries much of Shakespearean biography will have to be rewritten. I highly recommend this book to all those interested in Shakespeare's inner life. The book is currently out of print but is available on line here on the Sonnets web site
